PSALMS: CHAPTER 97

Psalm 97 opens with the triumphant call: 'The Lord reigneth; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad thereof.' The psalmist paints an awe-inspiring portrait of the Lord clothed in majestic clouds and darkness, with righteousness and justice as the eternal foundation of His throne. Consuming fire goes before Him, lightning illuminates the earth, and mountains melt like wax before His presence, bringing shame to all who worship carved images. Yet for the believer, this awesome majesty is a source of profound security: 'Ye that love the Lord, hate evil: he preserveth the souls of his saints; he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked. Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.' This psalm inspires holy awe and reminds us that God's power is deployed to protect and gladden those who love Him.
