1 JOHN: CHAPTER 4

This chapter warns us to be careful about the spiritual messages and teachers we listen to, because many false teachers are active in the world. It provides a key test: if a message confirms that Jesus Christ truly came to earth as a human, it's from God. If it denies this, it's from an anti-Christ spirit. The chapter reassures believers that because God lives in them, they are stronger than any evil influences. It then powerfully shifts to the theme of love, explaining that genuine love comes from God, and showing love to others proves we know Him. God demonstrated His ultimate love by sending His only Son, Jesus, to bring us life and take away our sins. Because God loved us so much, we are commanded to love one another. This love helps us live without fear, even when thinking about future judgement, because perfect love removes all fear. The chapter concludes by emphasising that true love for God must be shown through love for fellow believers; it's impossible to love God, whom we can't see, if we don't love the people we can see.
