1 SAMUEL: CHAPTER 6

This chapter tells the story of the Ark of the Lord's return to Israel from the Philistine territory, where it had been for seven months. The Philistines, who had been suffering from plagues like tumours and a mouse infestation, consulted their religious leaders to find out how to get rid of the Ark and stop their suffering. They were advised to send the Ark back to Israel, not empty, but with a special offering: golden images of the tumours and mice that had afflicted them. As a test to see if their troubles truly came from the God of Israel, they were told to place the Ark on a new cart pulled by two mother cows that had never been yoked and whose calves were kept away from them. If these cows went straight to Israel without turning off course, it would confirm that God was behind their misfortune. The Philistines followed these instructions, and the cows miraculously went directly to the Israelite town of Beth Shemesh. The people of Beth Shemesh rejoiced at the Ark's return and offered the cows as a sacrifice. However, some of them looked inside the sacred Ark, which was forbidden, and God punished them severely, causing many deaths. Frightened, the people of Beth Shemesh then sent messengers to Kirjath Jearim, asking them to come and take the Ark away.
