GENESIS: CHAPTER 44

Chapter 44 details Joseph's final and most intense test for his brothers. After loading their sacks with grain and secretly returning their money, Joseph instructs his household manager to hide his personal silver cup inside Benjamin's sack. As the brothers depart for Canaan, the manager pursues them, accuses them of theft, and "discovers" the cup in Benjamin's possession. Overcome with despair, the brothers return to Joseph, who insists that only Benjamin, the supposed thief, will become his slave, while the others are free to return to their father. In response, Judah delivers a powerful and emotional plea. He explains their aged father Jacob's profound love and dependence on Benjamin, especially after the presumed death of his other son (Joseph himself). Judah then offers to become Joseph's slave in Benjamin's place, demonstrating a deep loyalty and sacrifice to spare his father from unbearable grief. This moment sets the stage for Joseph's long-awaited revelation.
