PSALMS: CHAPTER 80

Psalm 80 is an urgent and sorrowful prayer from the people of Israel to God, asking for His help and restoration. The psalm describes the nation feeling abandoned and suffering greatly, facing destruction from their enemies. It uses the powerful image of Israel as a grape vine that God Himself brought out of Egypt, planted, and caused to flourish, but which is now being attacked and broken down. The psalm repeatedly pleads with God to "turn us again," meaning to bring His people back to Him, show His favour, and save them from their distress. It also expresses hope for a special leader or chosen person whom God will empower to bring about this deliverance.
