1 CHRONICLES: CHAPTER 19

Chapter 19 tells the story of a conflict that began between Israel and the Ammonites. After the death of Nahash, the Ammonite king, King David sent messengers to express sympathy to Nahash's son, Hanun. However, Hanun's advisors wrongly convinced him that David's men were actually spies. As a result, Hanun publicly shamed David's messengers in a very disrespectful way. This deeply angered David. Realising their mistake, the Ammonites hired many Syrian soldiers from various regions to prepare for war against Israel. David sent his experienced general Joab, who skilfully led the Israelite army to victory over the combined Ammonite and Syrian forces. Later, when the Syrians gathered an even larger army, David himself led the Israelites across the Jordan River, achieving a decisive victory. This defeat caused the Syrians to surrender, make peace with David, and become his subjects, ending their support for the Ammonites.
