JOSHUA: CHAPTER 1

Chapter 1 of Joshua marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Israelites after the death of their long-time leader, Moses. God speaks directly to Joshua, commissioning him to lead the people into the promised land of Canaan. God gives Joshua several powerful promises: that He will be with him just as He was with Moses, that no one will be able to defeat him, and that every place he steps will be given to Israel. In return, God instructs Joshua to be strong and courageous, and to carefully obey all of God's laws given through Moses. Joshua then acts on these instructions, commanding the Israelite leaders to prepare the people for the crossing of the Jordan River in three days. He also reminds the tribes who had settled east of the Jordan (Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh) of their promise to help their fellow Israelites conquer the land to the west before returning to their own homes. The chapter concludes with the people's strong declaration of loyalty and obedience to Joshua, pledging to follow his commands and even enforcing a death penalty for rebellion, while also encouraging Joshua to remain strong and brave.
