ACTS: CHAPTER 1

Chapter 1 of Acts establishes the setting by addressing Theophilus, the recipient, and briefly recapping Jesus' final instructions to his followers after his resurrection. It details Jesus spending forty days teaching his disciples about God's kingdom and commanding them to remain in Jerusalem to await the promised Holy Spirit, which would empower them as His witnesses globally. The chapter then dramatically describes Jesus' visible ascension into heaven, witnessed by his disciples, and the subsequent reassurance from two angels that he will return in the same manner. Back in Jerusalem, the apostles and other believers gather. Peter addresses the group, explaining Judas Iscariot's fate and the necessity of choosing a replacement apostle to restore the number twelve. After praying for divine guidance, they select Matthias to fill the vacant position among the apostles by casting lots.
