MATTHEW: CHAPTER 24

In Matthew Chapter 24, Jesus delivers a significant prophecy known as the "Olivet Discourse" to his disciples on the Mount of Olives. He begins by foretelling the complete destruction of the Jerusalem Temple. His disciples then ask him about the signs of his return and the end of the world. Jesus warns them against deception, describing a period marked by false prophets, wars, famines, earthquakes, and intense persecution of believers. He calls these events the "beginning of birth pains." He emphasises that the good news of the kingdom must be preached worldwide before the final end. Jesus then describes a time of unprecedented suffering, often called the Great Tribulation, giving specific instructions for survival during this period and assuring that these days will be shortened for the sake of God's chosen. He warns against believing false claims about his presence, stating that his true coming will be unmistakable and universally visible. After cosmic disturbances, he will return with power and glory, sending angels to gather his elect. Jesus uses the parable of the fig tree to illustrate that these signs mean his return is near, yet stresses that no one knows the exact day or hour, except the Father. He compares his coming to the unexpected flood in Noah's time, highlighting the sudden separation of people. The chapter concludes with parables urging constant watchfulness and readiness, contrasting the rewarded faithful servant with the severely punished unfaithful one, to underscore the importance of being prepared for his unexpected return.
