REVELATION: CHAPTER 3

Chapter 3 of Revelation delivers messages from Jesus to three more of the seven churches in Asia Minor: Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea. First, Jesus addresses the church in Sardis, criticising them for appearing spiritually active and alive on the outside, but being inwardly dead. He urges them to wake up, strengthen what little faith remains, and turn from their complacency, warning of His sudden return if they don't. He also acknowledges a faithful few within Sardis who will be rewarded. Next, Jesus praises the church in Philadelphia for their steadfastness despite their limited strength. He commends them for keeping His word and not denying His name. He promises them an open door of opportunity, protection from future trials, and a lasting place of honour. Finally, Jesus strongly rebukes the church in Laodicea for being "lukewarm"—neither passionately committed nor completely against Him. He expresses disgust at their spiritual indifference and their self-deception, as they consider themselves rich and in need of nothing, while Jesus sees them as truly poor, blind, and naked. He advises them to seek genuine spiritual wealth, clothing, and sight from Him, and encourages them to be zealous and repent, inviting them to personal fellowship if they open their hearts.
