1 KINGS: CHAPTER 19

Chapter 19 tells the story of the prophet Elijah’s deep despair and his powerful encounter with God after his dramatic victory over the prophets of Baal. Following Queen Jezebel’s death threat, Elijah flees into the wilderness, feeling overwhelmed and alone. He asks God to take his life. God, however, provides for him through an angel, strengthening him for a forty-day journey to Mount Horeb. There, God reveals Himself not in dramatic displays of wind, earthquake, or fire, but in a quiet whisper. God then gives Elijah new instructions, reassuring him that he is not alone and commissioning him to anoint new kings and to appoint Elisha as his successor. Elijah finds Elisha and calls him to ministry, symbolising the transfer of his prophetic mantle.
