2 KINGS: CHAPTER 2

Chapter 2 of 2 Kings tells the incredible story of the prophet Elijah being taken to heaven and his spiritual power being passed on to his helper, Elisha. As Elijah and Elisha travel together, Elijah repeatedly tries to get Elisha to stay behind, but Elisha refuses to leave him. Along their journey, other groups of prophets recognise that Elijah is about to be taken away by God. When they reach the Jordan River, Elijah performs a miracle, parting the waters so they can cross on dry ground. Elijah then asks Elisha what he wants before he leaves, and Elisha requests a double share of Elijah's spiritual anointing. Moments later, a fiery chariot with fiery horses appears, separating them, and Elijah is carried up to heaven in a whirlwind. Elisha witnesses this amazing event and picks up Elijah's cloak that falls. Using the cloak, Elisha then parts the Jordan River himself, showing that God's power is now with him. Elisha performs his first miracle by purifying a town's undrinkable water. The chapter concludes with Elisha cursing a group of disrespectful young boys who mocked him, leading to them being attacked by bears.
