1 KINGS: CHAPTER 3

Chapter 3 of 1 Kings opens with King Solomon establishing political alliances, including marrying an Egyptian princess, and touches upon the worship practises of the time, which included sacrificing at "high places" because the Temple hadn't yet been built. The core of the chapter describes a pivotal moment at Gibeon where God appears to Solomon in a dream. Instead of asking for personal wealth or power, Solomon humbly requests wisdom and an understanding heart to govern God's vast people justly. God is pleased with this selfless request and grants him extraordinary wisdom, along with unasked-for riches and honour, promising a long life if Solomon remains obedient. The chapter concludes with a famous demonstration of Solomon's divine wisdom: his clever resolution of a dispute between two women, each claiming to be the mother of the same living infant, proving his ability to discern truth and deliver righteous judgement.
