1 SAMUEL: CHAPTER 1

This opening chapter introduces Elkanah, a man with two wives, Hannah and Peninnah. Hannah is deeply saddened because she is unable to have children, a fact that Peninnah, who has many children, frequently uses to taunt her. Each year, Elkanah’s family makes a pilgrimage to Shiloh to worship God. During one of these trips, Hannah, overwhelmed with sorrow, makes a heartfelt promise to God: if He grants her a son, she will dedicate him to serve God for his entire life. Eli, the high priest, observes her intense prayer and initially mistakes her for being drunk, but upon hearing her explanation, he offers her a blessing. In time, God answers Hannah's prayer, and she gives birth to a boy whom she names Samuel. Keeping her solemn promise, once Samuel is old enough to no longer need his mother's milk, she brings him to Shiloh to live and serve in God's house.
