LUKE: CHAPTER 1

Chapter 1 of Luke sets the stage for the arrival of Jesus and his cousin, John the Baptist. It begins with Luke explaining his purpose for writing an accurate account for a man named Theophilus. The chapter then introduces Zacharias, an elderly priest, and his wife Elisabeth, who are righteous but childless. An angel appears to Zacharias, announcing that Elisabeth will bear a son, John, who will prepare the way for the Lord. Zacharias's doubt leads to him being unable to speak until the birth. Six months later, the angel Gabriel visits Mary, a young virgin, to tell her she will miraculously conceive Jesus, the Son of God. Mary then visits her cousin Elisabeth, and both women express joy and praise God for these incredible events. Finally, John the Baptist is born, Zacharias regains his speech, and he delivers a powerful prophecy about his son's future role and the coming of the Saviour.
