JUDGES: CHAPTER 13

This chapter introduces the story of Samson, a key figure in the book of Judges. It begins with the Israelites once again turning away from God, leading to them being oppressed by the Philistines for forty years. In response, God sends a messenger, an angel, to a woman named Manoah's wife, who has been unable to have children. The angel announces that she will conceive and bear a son who will be a Nazirite from birth—meaning he must follow special rules, including never cutting his hair—and who will begin to deliver Israel from the Philistines. Manoah prays for the angel to return to provide more specific instructions for raising this special child. The angel reappears, reiterates the commands, and then dramatically reveals his divine nature by ascending into heaven within the flames of a sacrifice. Manoah and his wife are awestruck and fearful, realising they have seen a divine messenger. Finally, the son, Samson, is born, grows, and begins to experience the empowering presence of God's Spirit.
