JEREMIAH: CHAPTER 23

Chapter 23 of Jeremiah opens with a strong warning from God against the unfaithful leaders, referred to as "shepherds" or "pastors," who have failed to care for and have even scattered His people. God promises to gather His scattered flock, protect them, and appoint new, good leaders who will guide them properly. The chapter then shifts to a message of hope, prophesying the coming of a righteous King from the line of David. This future King will rule fairly, bring justice, and ensure safety and salvation for God's people, and He will be known by the special name, "THE LORD IS OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS." The focus then turns back to a severe condemnation of false prophets and priests in Jeremiah's time. God expresses His deep sorrow and anger over their lies, immorality, and corrupt messages, which have led the people astray and corrupted the entire land. He warns the people not to listen to these prophets who speak from their own imaginations, promising peace and safety to those who ignore God. God emphasises His omnipresence—that He sees and knows everything—and the immense power and truth of His own word, contrasting it with the empty dreams and deceitful words of the false prophets. He declares that these imposters were never sent by Him and will not help His people. The chapter concludes with a stern warning against using the phrase "the burden of the LORD" (meaning "the message of the LORD") in a dismissive or disrespectful way. God states that anyone who uses this phrase carelessly, implying His messages are just an annoyance, will face severe punishment and lasting shame, because they have twisted the words of the living God.
