1 CORINTHIANS: CHAPTER 1

Chapter 1 begins with Paul's customary greeting to the Corinthian church, expressing thanks for their spiritual gifts and God's faithfulness. He quickly moves to address a major problem: divisions within the church. Paul calls for unity, revealing that members are aligning themselves with different leaders (Paul, Apollos, Cephas, or even Christ) and warns against such factions, reminding them that Christ is not divided. He clarifies that his primary mission is to preach the simple message of the cross, not to baptise or use impressive human wisdom. This leads into a powerful explanation that God's plan of salvation, centred on a crucified Christ, seems foolish to the world's wise but is, in fact, God's ultimate power and wisdom. God deliberately chooses the weak, humble, and overlooked people of the world to shame the strong and wise, ensuring that no one can boast about themselves, but only about what the Lord has done.
