LUKE: CHAPTER 22

Chapter 22 of Luke marks the beginning of Jesus' final hours before his crucifixion. It opens with the plot by the Jewish leaders to kill Jesus, and Judas Iscariot's agreement to betray him. Jesus then sends Peter and John to prepare for the Passover meal, which becomes the Last Supper. During this meal, Jesus institutes the new covenant, symbolised by the bread and wine, and foretells his betrayal by one of his disciples. He also warns Peter that he will deny him three times. After the supper, Jesus and his disciples go to the Mount of Olives, where Jesus prays intensely in the Garden of Gethsemane, accepting his Father's will. Judas then arrives with a crowd to arrest Jesus, who heals a servant's ear during the confrontation. Jesus is led to the high priest's house, where Peter, following from a distance, denies knowing Jesus three times, just as Jesus predicted. Finally, Jesus is mocked and beaten by his captors and brought before the Jewish council, where he confirms his identity as the Son of God.
