MATTHEW: CHAPTER 19

Chapter 19 of Matthew takes Jesus and His disciples into the region of Judea, where He continues His ministry of healing. The chapter begins with a challenge from the Pharisees regarding divorce, to which Jesus responds by reaffirming God's original design for marriage and clarifying Moses' allowance for divorce. Following this, Jesus welcomes children, emphasising their importance in the Kingdom of Heaven. He then encounters a rich young man who asks how to gain eternal life. Jesus initially points to the commandments, but then challenges the man to give up his wealth and follow Him, leading to a discussion with His disciples about the difficulty for the wealthy to enter God's Kingdom. The chapter concludes with Peter asking about the disciples' reward for following Jesus, and Jesus promises them significant roles in the new world, while also introducing the paradox that "the first will be last, and the last first."
