GENESIS: CHAPTER 2

Chapter 2 continues the story of creation, focusing more closely on the creation of humans and the world they would inhabit. It describes how God finished his work on the seventh day and rested, making that day special. The chapter then provides more detail about how God created the first man, Adam, from the earth, breathing life into him. God then planted a special garden in Eden for Adam to live in and care for, filled with beautiful and edible trees, including the Tree of Life and the forbidden Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. God gave Adam a single command: not to eat from the forbidden tree, warning of death if he disobeyed. Recognising that Adam needed a companion, God allowed Adam to name all the animals, but none were a suitable helper for him. Finally, God created the first woman, Eve, from Adam's rib, bringing them together as partners and explaining the foundation of marriage. At this point, both Adam and Eve lived in innocence, without shame.
