REVELATION: CHAPTER 2

Chapter 2 of Revelation records messages from Jesus to four of the seven churches in Asia Minor: Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, and Thyatira. Each message begins with a description of Jesus, followed by His observations about the church's actions, both good and bad. * Ephesus is praised for their hard work, patience, and rejection of false teachers, but criticised for having lost their initial passionate love for Jesus. They are called to remember, change their ways, and return to their first devotion. * Smyrna receives no criticism, only commendation. They are praised for their steadfast faith despite severe suffering, poverty, and slander from those who falsely claim to be God's people. They are encouraged to remain faithful even in the face of death, with a promise of eternal life. * Pergamum is acknowledged for holding onto Jesus' name in a place where Satan holds power and a faithful follower, Antipas, was killed. However, they are rebuked for tolerating false teachings that lead to idolatry and immorality, including the doctrines of Balaam and the Nicolaitans. They are urged to repent. * Thyatira is praised for their growing love, service, faith, and patient endurance, with their later actions being more impressive than their first. Nevertheless, they are strongly criticised for allowing a woman named Jezebel, who claims to be a prophetess, to mislead Jesus' followers into sexual sin and eating food offered to idols. Severe judgement is promised for her and her followers unless they repent, while the faithful are told to hold firmly to their beliefs. Each message concludes with a call to listen to the Spirit and a promise for those who overcome.
