GENESIS: CHAPTER 17

Chapter 17 describes God appearing to Abram when he is ninety-nine years old, reaffirming His special agreement with him. God changes Abram's name to Abraham, meaning "father of many nations," and promises him countless descendants and the land of Canaan forever. As a permanent sign of this agreement, God commands Abraham and all his male descendants, including household members, to be circumcised. God also renames Sarai to Sarah and promises that she, despite her old age, will bear Abraham a son named Isaac, through whom the everlasting covenant will continue. Although God promises to bless Ishmael, He makes it clear that Isaac will be the son of the covenant. Abraham immediately obeys God's command and circumcises every male in his household that same day.
