GENESIS: CHAPTER 14

This chapter tells the story of an ancient war involving several kings in the region where Abram (later Abraham) lived. Four powerful eastern kings, led by Chedorlaomer, invaded and conquered a group of five local kings, including those of Sodom and Gomorrah, who had previously rebelled against them. During this invasion, Abram's nephew, Lot, who was living in Sodom, was captured along with his family and belongings. When Abram learned of Lot's capture, he gathered his own trained household servants, pursued the victorious kings, and launched a surprise night attack, defeating them. Abram rescued Lot, recovered all the stolen goods, women, and people. On his return, Abram was met by Melchizedek, the priest-king of Salem, who blessed him and to whom Abram gave a tenth of everything. Abram then famously refused to take any spoils of war from the king of Sodom, stating that his victory was from God, not from human gain.
