MATTHEW: CHAPTER 1

Chapter 1 begins by establishing Jesus Christ's royal and ancestral heritage, providing a detailed family tree that traces his origins from Abraham through King David, all the way to Joseph, Mary's husband. This genealogy is carefully structured into three sets of fourteen generations, highlighting its significance. The chapter then shifts focus to the miraculous circumstances surrounding Jesus' birth. It explains how Mary, though engaged to Joseph, became pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Joseph, an upright man, initially intended to end their engagement discreetly, but an angel appeared to him in a dream, confirming the divine origin of the child and instructing him to marry Mary and name the son Jesus, for he would save his people. This event is presented as the fulfilment of an ancient prophecy about a virgin giving birth to Immanuel, meaning "God with us." Joseph obeyed the divine instruction, taking Mary as his wife but not having marital relations until after Jesus was born.
