HAGGAI: CHAPTER 1

Chapter 1 opens with God's direct message through the prophet Haggai to the leaders, Zerubbabel and Joshua, and to the people of Judah. God confronts their excuse that it's "not the right time" to rebuild His Temple. He challenges them for living in comfortable, well-built houses while His house remains in ruins. God explains that their current difficulties—like unproductive harvests, constant dissatisfaction, and wasted earnings—are direct consequences of their misplaced priorities. He urges them to "consider their ways" and start gathering timber to rebuild the Temple, promising that He will be pleased and honoured by their efforts. Moved by this divine call, the leaders and the entire community respond in obedience, fearing the Lord and beginning the work on the Temple. Haggai then delivers an encouraging message that God is with them.
