JOEL: CHAPTER 1

Chapter 1 of Joel opens with the prophet receiving a message from God. He immediately calls upon the elders and all the people to witness and remember an unprecedented disaster: a series of devastating insect plagues followed by a severe drought. This calamity has completely destroyed all vegetation, including crops, vineyards, and fruit trees, leading to widespread famine and economic ruin. The absence of harvest means that offerings to God's temple cannot be made, causing the priests to mourn. Joel urgently calls for everyone—from drunkards lamenting their lost wine to farmers despairing over their fields—to mourn, fast, and cry out to God. He warns that this catastrophe signifies the approaching "Day of the LORD," a time of great destruction, emphasising the dire state of the land and its inhabitants, including the suffering animals.
