AMOS: CHAPTER 1

Chapter 1 introduces Amos, the prophet, and sets the stage for his message by describing when and where he received his visions. It immediately establishes God's powerful authority, declaring that He will "roar" from Jerusalem, bringing desolation. The majority of the chapter is then dedicated to a series of divine judgements against several surrounding nations: Damascus (Syria), Gaza (Philistia), Tyre (Phoenicia), Edom, and Ammon. For each nation, God highlights a specific, severe sin they committed, often involving cruelty, broken treaties, or the ruthless sale of people. For these repeated and severe offences, God announces that His punishment will not be turned back, promising destruction by fire upon their cities and the captivity of their leaders.
