OBADIAH: CHAPTER 1

Chapter 1 of Obadiah begins with God's announcement of impending judgement against Edom. God declares that Edom, despite its perceived strength and high, secure dwelling places, will be made small and despised because of its arrogance. The prophet reveals that Edom's own allies will betray them, and their wisdom and military strength will fail. The core of Edom's sin is highlighted: they stood by, gloated, and even participated when foreign armies attacked Jerusalem and carried off its treasures and people. The chapter warns that the "day of the Lord" is coming for all nations, and Edom will suffer the same fate it inflicted on others. It concludes with a hopeful prophecy that Mount Zion (Jerusalem) will be a place of safety and holiness, and the descendants of Jacob will return, reclaim their land, and eventually overcome their enemies, including a complete downfall for the people of Esau (Edom).
