REVELATION: CHAPTER 9

Chapter 9 of Revelation describes two terrible judgements unleashed on the Earth by the blowing of trumpets. First, the fifth angel sounds a trumpet, opening a bottomless pit from which a massive cloud of smoke and strange, demonic locusts emerge. These creatures are commanded to torture, but not kill, people who do not have God's protective mark, inflicting pain like a scorpion's sting for five months. These locusts are described with terrifying features, including human faces, lion's teeth, and scorpion tails, and are led by an angel named Abaddon/Apollyon. After this first "woe," the sixth angel blows his trumpet, releasing four dangerous angels and an enormous army of two hundred million horsemen from the Euphrates River. These horsemen and their monstrous, lion-headed horses breathe fire, smoke, and sulphur, which kills one-third of all humanity. Despite these catastrophic events and widespread death, the people who survive refuse to turn away from their evil deeds, continuing to worship demons and worthless idols, and persisting in their murders, magic, sexual sins, and stealing.
