JOB: CHAPTER 2

Chapter 2 continues the story of Job's suffering. The scene once again opens in heaven, where God and Satan are conversing. God challenges Satan, noting Job's unwavering faithfulness despite the previous trials. Satan argues that Job's loyalty is only skin-deep and that if his physical health is attacked, he will surely turn against God. God permits Satan to strike Job with illness, but forbids him from taking Job's life. Satan then inflicts Job with terrible, painful boils all over his body. Job is reduced to scraping himself with a broken pot shard while sitting in ashes. His wife, witnessing his extreme agony, urges him to curse God and die, but Job rebukes her, reminding her that they should accept both good and bad from God. Throughout this, Job does not speak any sinful words. Finally, Job's three friends arrive to comfort him, but they are so shocked by his appearance that they don't recognise him and express their grief dramatically, then sit with him in silence for seven days, seeing how immense his suffering is.
