ESTHER: CHAPTER 1

Chapter 1 introduces the mighty King Ahasuerus, ruler of an enormous empire, who holds two extravagant banquets in his capital city, Susa. The first, lasting 180 days, showcases his wealth and power to his officials. The second, a seven-day party in the palace gardens, is for all the city's inhabitants. During this second feast, the king, made cheerful by wine, orders his stunning Queen Vashti to appear before him and his male guests, wearing her royal crown. Vashti, however, refuses to come. This defiance infuriates the king, who then consults his wise advisors about the legal consequences for the queen. One advisor, Memucan, suggests that Vashti be permanently removed from her royal position to prevent other women from disrespecting their husbands. The king agrees and issues a decree to all provinces, stating that every man should be the head of his household and that Vashti will no longer be queen, making way for a new queen to be chosen.
