ESTHER: CHAPTER 2

This chapter describes King Ahasuerus's decision to find a new queen after Vashti's banishment. He initiates a kingdom-wide search for beautiful young women, who are brought to the palace in Susa for a year of beauty treatments. Among them is Esther, a Jewish orphan raised by her cousin Mordecai. Esther keeps her Jewish identity a secret. She quickly gains favour with Hegai, the official in charge of the women. After her turn to visit the king, Ahasuerus chooses Esther, making her queen. The chapter concludes with Mordecai uncovering a plot by two palace guards to harm the king, which Esther reports, leading to the guards' execution and the event being recorded in the royal chronicles.
