ESTHER: CHAPTER 3

This chapter details Haman's rapid rise to power in King Ahasuerus's kingdom, placing him above all other officials. The king commanded everyone to bow to Haman, but Mordecai, a Jewish man, refused. This defiance infuriated Haman, who, upon learning of Mordecai's Jewish heritage, decided to plot the extermination of all Jewish people throughout the entire empire, not just Mordecai. Through a lottery system, a date was chosen for this terrible act. Haman then convinced King Ahasuerus to approve the plan, falsely claiming the Jews were disloyal and a threat. The king, trusting Haman, gave him his royal seal, authorising the decree to be sent out. Letters were quickly dispatched to all provinces, ordering the killing of all Jews—men, women, and children—on a specific day, and allowing their property to be taken. While Haman and the king celebrated, the capital city of Susa was left in a state of shock and confusion.
