1 SAMUEL: CHAPTER 9

Chapter 9 introduces us to Saul, a tall and handsome young man from the tribe of Benjamin. When his father's donkeys go missing, Saul is sent out with a servant to find them. After an unsuccessful search through several regions, Saul becomes worried about his father's concern for them. His servant suggests they consult a respected "man of God" (Samuel, also called a "seer") in a nearby city, hoping he can provide guidance. Unbeknownst to Saul, the Lord had already revealed to Samuel the day before that He would send a man from Benjamin to be anointed as Israel's first king, to deliver them from the Philistines. Saul and Samuel meet, and Samuel, recognising Saul from God's message, immediately takes charge. He reassures Saul that the donkeys are found, hints at Saul's future importance, and honours him with a special meal among invited guests. The chapter concludes with Samuel and Saul having a private rooftop conversation, with Samuel preparing to reveal God's specific message to Saul.
