1 SAMUEL: CHAPTER 8

Chapter 8 describes a turning point in the history of Israel, as the people demand a king. Samuel, now old, has appointed his corrupt and unjust sons as judges, which prompts the elders of Israel to approach him. They insist on having a king to rule them, like all the surrounding nations, because Samuel's sons are unfit leaders. Samuel is deeply troubled by this request and prays to God. God tells Samuel to listen to the people, explaining that their rejection isn't of Samuel, but of God's direct rule over them. God then instructs Samuel to warn the people about the heavy burdens and demands a human king will place upon them – including conscripting their children, seizing their property, and taking a portion of their wealth. Despite these severe warnings, the people stubbornly refuse to change their minds, insisting they want a king to lead them and fight their battles, just like other nations. Finally, God tells Samuel to grant their wish and appoint a king for them.
