MARK: CHAPTER 1

Chapter 1 of Mark quickly introduces Jesus' public ministry. It begins by presenting John the Baptist as the prophetic figure who prepares the way for Jesus. John baptises Jesus, at which point a divine voice declares Jesus to be God's beloved Son, and the Holy Spirit descends upon him. Jesus then faces temptation in the wilderness before beginning his work in Galilee. He calls his first disciples—Simon, Andrew, James, and John—and immediately demonstrates his authority by teaching in the synagogue, casting out an evil spirit, and healing many sick people, including Simon's mother-in-law. The chapter ends with Jesus spreading his message and healing across Galilee, even touching and cleansing a man with leprosy, which causes his fame to spread widely.
