MATTHEW: CHAPTER 2

Chapter 2 of Matthew describes the events surrounding Jesus's birth and early childhood, emphasising his royal lineage and the challenges he faced from earthly powers. It begins with the arrival of wise men from the East who are seeking the newborn "King of the Jews," guided by a star. This news deeply troubles King Herod, who fears a rival to his throne. Herod secretly questions the wise men and then sends them to Bethlehem, pretending he also wishes to worship the child. The wise men find Jesus, present him with gifts, but are warned in a dream not to return to Herod. Subsequently, an angel warns Joseph in a dream to flee to Egypt with Mary and Jesus because Herod plans to kill the child. After the Holy Family escapes, Herod, enraged by the wise men's deceit, orders the slaughter of all male children two years old and under in Bethlehem and the surrounding areas. After Herod's death, an angel tells Joseph to return to Israel, but Joseph, fearing Herod's son Archelaus, settles his family in Nazareth in Galilee, fulfilling another prophetic word.
