NUMBERS: CHAPTER 1

Chapter 1 begins by describing God's command to Moses to conduct a detailed census of the Israelite men. This count is specifically for males aged twenty years and older who are capable of serving in the military. Moses and Aaron are instructed to carry out this task with the help of a designated leader from each of the twelve tribes. The chapter then meticulously lists the numerical strength of each tribe, revealing a total of over six hundred thousand men fit for battle. Importantly, the tribe of Levi is explicitly excluded from this military census, as God assigns them a distinct and sacred responsibility: to care for, transport, and guard the Tabernacle and its holy contents, emphasising their unique role in Israel's worship.
