GENESIS: CHAPTER 49

Chapter 49 of Genesis records the final words of Jacob (also called Israel) to his twelve sons just before he dies. He gathers them to reveal what will happen to their descendants, who will become the twelve tribes of Israel, in the future. Jacob speaks a specific blessing or prophecy over each son, sometimes praising their character and future prosperity, sometimes rebuking past actions, and often foretelling the nature, territory, or destiny of the tribe that will descend from them. After delivering these prophetic words, Jacob gives detailed instructions to his sons regarding his burial, requesting to be laid to rest in the family tomb in Canaan with his ancestors Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah, and Leah. The chapter concludes with Jacob's peaceful death.
