JOHN: CHAPTER 20

Chapter 20 of John tells the exciting story of what happened right after Jesus' death and burial. It starts early on Sunday morning when Mary Magdalene discovers Jesus' tomb is empty and quickly tells Peter and John. They rush to see for themselves and find only the grave clothes. Mary returns later and is the first person to meet the resurrected Jesus, though she doesn't recognise him at first. That same evening, Jesus appears to his fearful disciples in a locked room, bringing them peace and giving them the Holy Spirit for a special mission. The chapter then introduces "Doubting Thomas," one of Jesus' followers who wasn't there for the first appearance and refused to believe Jesus was alive unless he could physically touch his wounds. A week later, Jesus appears again, specifically inviting Thomas to touch him, leading Thomas to declare Jesus as his Lord and God. The chapter finishes by explaining that these amazing events were written down so that everyone who reads them might believe Jesus is the Son of God and gain eternal life through him.
