1 CHRONICLES: CHAPTER 24

Chapter 24 explains how King David, along with the priests Zadok and Ahimelech, set up a system to organise the descendants of Aaron for their duties as priests. Since Aaron's first two sons had died without children, all future priests came from the lines of his other two sons, Eleazar and Ithamar. David created 24 different groups from these families and used a random drawing, like picking names out of a hat, to decide which group would serve in the temple at different times. Sixteen groups came from Eleazar's family and eight from Ithamar's. The chapter then lists all 24 names of these priestly divisions. Finally, it also provides a list of other Levite families, who weren't priests but helped with other temple tasks, and mentions that they too were organised into groups through a similar process of drawing lots. This whole system was designed to ensure smooth and orderly service in God's house, just as God had originally commanded through Aaron.
