NEHEMIAH: CHAPTER 12

This chapter first lists the many priests and Levites who returned to Jerusalem with Zerubbabel and Jeshua after the Babylonian exile, tracing their family lines and leaders through several generations, including the high priests. The main part of the chapter describes the grand and joyful ceremony held to dedicate the newly rebuilt wall of Jerusalem. Nehemiah organised two large groups of people who marched in opposite directions on top of the wall, celebrating with loud singing, musical instruments, and special sacrifices to thank God. The celebration involved everyone, from leaders to children. Finally, the chapter explains how the people of Israel set up systems to ensure that the temple workers – the singers, gatekeepers, priests, and Levites – received their regular support, allowing them to continue their important service to God.
