EZRA: CHAPTER 6

This chapter details King Darius's discovery of King Cyrus's original decree permitting the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem and the return of its sacred articles. After confirming Cyrus's earlier command, Darius issues his own forceful decree, ordering the local governors to stop hindering the Jews' construction efforts. He also mandates that the building expenses, along with daily provisions for sacrifices, be paid from the royal treasury. Darius pronounces a severe curse against anyone who disobeys or attempts to destroy the temple. Following these royal orders, the governors quickly comply, and the Jewish elders, encouraged by the prophets Haggai and Zechariah, successfully complete the temple. The chapter concludes with the joyful dedication of the rebuilt house of God and the celebration of Passover by the returned exiles.
