EZRA: CHAPTER 7

Chapter 7 introduces Ezra, a highly skilled priest and expert in God's law, who lived in Babylon. It details his long lineage, tracing his family back to Aaron, the first high priest. The chapter describes Ezra's journey to Jerusalem during the reign of King Artaxerxes, emphasising that God's favour was upon him, leading the king to grant all his requests. Many other Israelites, including priests and Levites, joined him. The most significant part of the chapter is a copy of King Artaxerxes' official letter, which gives Ezra extensive authority and resources. This decree allows Ezra to bring gifts for the Temple, draw funds from the royal treasury for its needs, and exempts temple workers from taxes. Crucially, the king empowers Ezra to appoint judges and enforce God's laws among the people in the region, with serious penalties for disobedience. The chapter concludes with Ezra praising God for inspiring the king to support the Temple and strengthen him for his mission.
