NUMBERS: CHAPTER 20

Chapter 20 begins with the sad news of Miriam's death and burial. The Israelites, now at Kadesh, face a critical water shortage, leading them to complain bitterly against Moses and Aaron. In response, God instructs Moses to speak to a rock to bring forth water. However, Moses, frustrated with the people, strikes the rock twice with his staff instead of speaking to it. While water flows abundantly, God punishes Moses and Aaron for their lack of faith and disobedience, declaring they will not lead the people into the promised land. The chapter then recounts Israel's attempt to pass peacefully through Edom, their relatives, which is refused with threats of war, forcing Israel to take a detour. Finally, the chapter concludes with Aaron's death on Mount Hor, where his priestly garments are transferred to his son Eleazar, marking the transfer of the high priesthood.
