1 KINGS

The First Book of Kings continues the history of God's people after King David's reign. It describes the transition of power from David to his son Solomon, detailing Solomon's impressive wisdom, his magnificent building projects—especially the First Temple in Jerusalem—and the vast wealth and peace he enjoyed. However, the book also records Solomon's eventual decline into idolatry, which led to God's judgement and the kingdom's fragmentation. Following Solomon's death, the unified nation of Israel splits into two separate kingdoms: the Northern Kingdom of Israel and the Southern Kingdom of Judah. The rest of the book chronicles the reigns of the various kings in both kingdoms, highlighting their obedience or disobedience to God, and introducing powerful prophets like Elijah, who courageously challenged the widespread worship of false gods. It shows how the choices of leaders profoundly affected the spiritual and political well-being of their people.
