1 CHRONICLES: CHAPTER 21

Chapter 21 of 1 Chronicles details a significant wrongdoing by King David when he decided to conduct a military census of Israel, an act that displeased God. Despite the objections of his general Joab, David proceeded with the count. As a consequence, God presented David with a choice of three severe punishments. David chose to place himself in God's hands, which resulted in a devastating plague that took 70,000 lives. When David saw the angel of the Lord poised to strike Jerusalem, he deeply repented and interceded for his people. God then instructed David to build an altar at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. David purchased the site, offered sacrifices, and God responded with fire from heaven, immediately halting the plague. This location would later become the sacred site for the Temple.
