JOHN: CHAPTER 6

Chapter 6 of John describes a series of powerful events and profound teachings by Jesus. It begins with Jesus miraculously feeding a huge crowd of over five thousand people using only five small loaves of bread and two fish. After this amazing demonstration, Jesus walks on water to meet his disciples during a stormy night. The majority of the chapter is then dedicated to Jesus explaining his identity as the "Bread of Life." He clarifies that while many people followed him for the physical food he provided, he offers a much deeper, spiritual nourishment—himself—which leads to eternal life. This teaching, especially his strong statement about needing to "eat his flesh and drink his blood" to have life, was very challenging for many listeners, causing many of his followers to abandon him. However, Peter and the other apostles reaffirmed their belief that Jesus alone possessed the words that lead to everlasting life. The chapter concludes with Jesus acknowledging that even among his chosen twelve, one person would eventually betray him.
