JOHN: CHAPTER 5

This chapter tells the story of Jesus healing a man who had been ill for 38 years at a special pool in Jerusalem. This healing took place on the Sabbath day, a day of rest, which caused a big disagreement with the Jewish religious leaders. Jesus then used this conflict as an opportunity to explain his unique relationship with God the Father, his divine authority over life and death, and his role as judge. He emphasised that he acts in complete unity with the Father and presented various powerful proofs for his identity, including the testimony of John the Baptist, his own miraculous deeds, the Father's direct witness, and the very Scriptures the leaders claimed to follow. Jesus criticised them for their unbelief and their focus on human praise rather than God's approval.
